Cheptegei wins Dubai half marathon in 59:26

Uganda’s long-distance great Joshua Cheptegei delivered a powerful statement of intent by winning the 2026 Dubai Half Marathon, edging out some of Africa’s finest runners in a dramatic sprint finish. The victory not only adds another major title to his résumé but also signals growing confidence as he continues his transition from track dominance to road and marathon racing.

Cheptegei crossed the finish line in 59:26, narrowly beating Kenya’s Nicolas Kipkorir (59:28) and Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu (59:30). The race was intensely tactical, with the leading pack running shoulder-to-shoulder for much of the distance. It was only in the final metres that Cheptegei’s trademark strength and finishing speed made the decisive difference.

The Dubai Half Marathon, known for its fast course and deep elite field, provided a strong test of endurance and race management. For Cheptegei, the closely contested nature of the race offered valuable lessons beyond the win itself—particularly in pacing, resilience, and closing power against seasoned road specialists.

Speaking after the race, Cheptegei described the victory as a significant confidence boost as he prepares for longer distances. Analysts see the performance as further evidence that the Ugandan star is adapting well to the physical and tactical demands of road racing, positioning himself as a serious contender for future full marathon challenges.

With this win, Cheptegei reinforces his status as one of Africa’s most versatile distance runners, capable of excelling beyond the track and delivering under pressure on the global stage.
