NKKD WATSAN Commissions a Low-Yielding Water Spring in Nyakiziba Village

The North Kigezi Diocese Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Department (NKKD WATSAN) on 29th September 2025 officially commissioned a low-yielding water spring in Nyakiziba Village, Nyakagyeme Sub-county, Rukungiri District, marking a significant milestone in the diocese’s efforts to improve access to clean and safe water in rural communities.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Rev. Canon Baingana Eric, the NKKD WATSAN Coordinator, expressed appreciation to the local community for their unwavering support and participation in the project. “If you want to know how expensive this spring is, consider the years you have spent without clean water,” he remarked, emphasizing the value and impact of the facility on community health and well-being.

Representing North Kigezi Diocese, Mr. Turyabe Abel Matita the Diocesan Head of Laity thanked the WATSAN team for their continued dedication to providing safe water to underserved communities. He also extended heartfelt appreciation to the UK Support Group for their generous contributions towards water projects in both North Kigezi and Kinkiizi dioceses. “I call upon the people to join us in thanking the UK Support Group for their continued partnership and support,” he said.

On behalf of the residents, Komujuni Annet, the LC1 Vice Chairperson, expressed deep gratitude to NKKD WATSAN and the Diocese for delivering on their promise of clean water after many years of relying on unsafe sources. “We had given up on promises from people who failed to deliver, and we were hesitant to trust NKKD WATSAN. But today, we are overjoyed because we shall no longer drink water with liver flukes, mud, soil, and snails,” she said.

The newly constructed water facility cost UGX 7,500,000 (seven million five hundred thousand shillings). In his closing remarks, Mr. Katunguka Marius, WATSAN’s Sustainability Officer, urged the community to take responsibility for protecting the spring from pollution and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

The commissioning of the Nyakiziba spring is part of North Kigezi Diocese’s ongoing commitment to improving health, hygiene, and quality of life through increased access to safe water in rural areas.

Other members who were present include; Rev. Kwesiga Benon Parish Priest Kyamurari COU, Rev. Kabarebe Moses WATSAN Coordinator for Kinkiizi Diocese and Namara Miriam WATSAN Accounts Officer.
