The Christian Battle Requires Effort: Embracing Discipline During Lent

The Christian Battle Requires Effort: Embracing Discipline During Lent

As Christians, we find ourselves engaged in a spiritual battle—a continuous struggle for our souls, minds, and hearts. The apostle Paul understood this challenge deeply and imparted timeless wisdom to believers in his letters to the Corinthians and Philippians. As we navigate the Lenten season, a time of reflection and sacrifice, let us remember the effort it takes to grow in our faith.

Key Scriptures

1 Corinthians 9:24-26

Paul encourages us with these powerful words:

  1. Run to win:
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” (v. 24)

  2. Discipline and self-control:
“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” (v. 25)

  3. Not aimless:
“Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.” (v. 26)

Philippians 3:12-14

In another powerful passage, Paul writes:
4. Pressing on:
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (v. 12)

  1. Forgetting the past:
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead...” (v. 13)

  2. Straining toward the goal:
“...I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (v. 14)

Application for the Lenten Season

1. Effort is Required

Lent is a season that invites us to reflect deeply on our spiritual journey. As we engage in prayer, fasting, and acts of service, we recognize that the Christian battle necessitates effort and discipline. Like athletes training for a race, we must be willing to invest ourselves fully.

2. Focus on the Prize

Our eyes should be fixed on the ultimate prize—eternal life with Christ. While the distractions of daily life can often feel overwhelming, the Lenten season is a poignant reminder to strive for the incorruptible crown that awaits us.

3. Pressing On

As we move through Lent, let us remember to forget what is behind us. Past mistakes, regrets, or failures should not hinder our journey. Instead, let us strain toward what lies ahead, embracing the hope and renewal that comes with the resurrection of Christ.

Final Reflection

The Christian battle requires ongoing effort, discipline, and self-control. During this Lenten season, may we commit to putting in the work necessary to grow in our faith. Let us keep our eyes on the prize, press on in our spiritual journey, and encourage one another in this sacred period of preparation.

Let’s Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to understand the importance of effort and discipline in our Christian walk. Give us the strength and courage to press on, fixing our eyes on the prize of eternal life with Christ. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
