The 11th session of the African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development was officially opened by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, at Speke Resort, Munyonyo.
The session that commenced with the 8th African Leadership Forum has been organized under the theme of realizing sustainable development goals in Africa: progress and way forward, attracting several delegates from across Africa, including current and former leaders.
In his address, President Museveni identified eight strategic bottlenecks that have hindered the social and economic transformation of African countries. These included lack of power to make decisions, weak states, wrong politics, suppression of the private sector and others, which he says should be addressed.
Museveni placed much emphasis on the exportation of raw materials as the biggest contributor to poverty in Africa, citing it as the major reason for the banning of the exportation of minerals out of the country.
President Museveni also tasked the member states to address the issue of infrastructure, which he says would help to intensify African market structures. Other key priority areas included education and health, which he said are essential for Africa to develop.
Hailemariam Desalegn, the former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, called for a comprehensive and progressive approach to the rapid population growth, which he says is putting pressure on the African resources.
The keynote address was delivered by Mafa Evaristus Chipeta, who based his message on selectiveness and focus in Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals implementation.
The African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development is an annual, intergovernmental, and multi-stakeholder platform mandated by the UN General Assembly to review and catalyze action towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
