Albinism Umbrella, NUDIPU Demand for Justice Against Albinism Murders: Police Criticized for Inaction Against Attacks on People with Albinism. Sylvia Nakiyemba Demands Justice After Surviving

In the wake of a brutal attack on a woman living with albinism, rights groups are demanding swift justice. The Albinism Umbrella, working alongside the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda, has condemned police inaction and urged the immediate arrest of the suspect. With Uganda home to nearly 79,000 people with albinism, the call for accountability echoes across a region where killings of persons with albinism remain a grave human rights concern.

Following the recent attack on a woman living with albinism, the Albinism Umbrella, in conjunction with the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda, demands justice. The organisations are calling on the police to take swift action to arrest the suspect behind the attempted murder.

Sylvia Nakiyemba, a resident of Kyotera and a woman living with albinism, recounted the harrowing events in which she narrowly escaped death.

Despite seeking help from the police, Sylvia said her pleas were ignored, forcing her to turn to the Albinism Umbrella for support. The organisation condemned the police for negligence, warning that many similar cases continue to go unresolved.

She demanded that justice be served by putting the culprit behind bars, stressing that such decisive action would deter others and instil fear against committing similar murders

According the 2024 census report, there are 78,876 people with albinism in Uganda. Between 2006 and 2016, human rights reports documented 166 killings of people with albinism across 25 African countries, including Uganda, which is cited as having one of the highest numbers in the region.
