Democratic Front Rejects 2026 Election Results, Calls for Reforms and Accountability
The Democratic Front (DF) has joined other opposition parties in rejecting the results of the 2026 presidential and parliamentary elections, raising concerns over alleged violence, electoral malpractice, and perceived lapses by the Electoral Commission. Party leader Mathias Mpuuga said the manner in which results were declared undermined the credibility of Uganda’s electoral process. Our reporter has the details.
In a briefing at the DF headquarters in Namirembe, Mpuuga outlined the party’s position and the steps it plans to take moving forward. He indicated the party is engaging its legal team and senior affiliates to determine the most appropriate course of action regarding the declared results and the conduct of the electoral process.
Key points from Mpuuga:
- Technical failures: He cited breakdowns in voter verification machines in several districts.
- Questionable results: He alleged that false results were announced in districts including Masaka, Gulu, Soroti, Kampala, Mukono, and Jinja.
- Declaration procedures: He argued that the presidential results were not declared in accordance with the law, stressing the need for transparency at district and national tally centers.
- Security involvement: The party criticized what it described as excessive military involvement in the electoral process.
- Reforms and reconciliation: Mpuuga outlined proposals for national reconciliation, electoral justice, and meaningful political reforms to restore public confidence.
- Internet shutdown and arrests: He condemned the internet blackout during the election period, noting disruptions to communication and the economy, and raised concerns over the detention of several individuals whose whereabouts remain unknown to their families.
The DF’s stance adds to a growing chorus of opposition voices calling for scrutiny of the electoral process and potential legal challenges or reforms. As consultations continue, all eyes are on how the Electoral Commission and security agencies respond to these concerns.
