Madi Chief Blames Apaa Conflict On Elected Leaders
The Madi cultural chief Stephen Drani has come out to blame the land conflict in Apaa on the elected and cultural leaders who do not tell their people the truth about the demarcations.
Drani who in May 2023 was arrested and detained at Openyzizi prison in Adjumani district on accusations of attempted murder and assault during the Apaa fracas organized a thanksgiving prayers where he called for unity and strengthening of the administrative institutions.
The Apaa land conflict has led to divisions between a section of people from the Madi and Acholi sub-regions.
Attempts to settle the dispute over the 40 square piece of land have been futile.
Today the Madi cultural leader Stephen Drani Izakare has again called on the elected region from both Madi and Acholi to discuss and find ways to settle this.
Drani who in May 2023 was arrested and detained at Openyzizi prison in Adjumani district on accusations of attempted murder and assault during the Apaa fracas organized a thanksgiving prayer for his safety.
The Apaa land conflict has escalated in the last 10 years with dozens of people reported to have been killed and hundreds of houses and property burnt down.
The Catholic Bishop of Arua Ochan Odoki from the Acholi sub-region joined the Madi cultural chief in praying for unity and peace between the two communities.
Prejudice and Lack of communication have also been identified as the major causes of bloodshed in the Apaa land.
In 2017, the minister for local government Tom Butiime announced that the Apaa land is located in Adjumani district and not Amuru.
