The Acholi Leadership Has Petitioned Court Over Land Conflicts

The Acholi Parliamentary Group and the Acholi cultural leadership have petitioned court in Gulu over the continued land conflicts in the region.

The Acholi cultural leadership and over 10 Members of Parliament filled a case in the Gulu high court challenging government silence over the notorious land grabbing in the region.

The Acholi cultural leadership and the regional parliamentary group has rushed to court to challenged governments continued perpetuity over land issues in the region.

MPs Hon. Akol Anthony, Santa Okot, Achan Judith, Gilbert Olanya, Tonny Awany, Acora Nancy, Lamwaka Margret, Komakech Christopher, Lagen David and Onekalit Denis Amere filled the case against Attorney General, Uganda Livestock Industry Ltd, Banuti Ranchers Ltd, ARPE Ltd and Commissioner land registration for boundaries extension, illegal and forceful evictions, and violation of human rights in Aswa ranch in Pader, Apa in Amuru, Got-apwoyo in Nwoya and many others.

Hon. Tonny Awany the area Member of Parliament for Nwoya County explained reasons for the petition. A section of the local say they are disappointed with the government over the continuous land issues in the region.

90% of Land in the Acholi sub-region is communally owned and is not registered by the lands registry thus exposing it to land grabbers and related land conflicts. These Land related conflict have increased substantially in the aftermath of the LRA insurgency.

The land related conflicts are compounded by distortions associated with the protracted civil conflict that lasted nearly 30 years.
