The Sacred Institution of Marriage: A Call for Commitment and Responsibility
In today’s world, where casual relationships and fleeting connections have become increasingly normalized, the Christian community needs to return to the foundational principles of marriage as outlined in Scripture. Exodus 22:16-17 provides us with a clear directive:
"If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride price for her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the bride price of virgins."
These verses underscore the importance of commitment and the serious responsibilities that come with romantic relationships. The act of seduction should never lead to abandonment or regret, as marriage is designed to honour both the woman and the family she comes from.
Understanding the Bride Price
The bride price, or dowry, is not merely a cultural artefact; it serves a significant purpose in protecting women and families. Traditionally, it compensates the bride’s family for the loss of her labour and companionship. More importantly, it establishes the husband’s legal rights over his wife and children. In cases where a man fails to fulfil this obligation, as highlighted in Scripture, he not only risks losing his legal rights but also his moral standing in the eyes of God.
The price of fifty shekels of silver, as specified in Deuteronomy 22:29, is no trivial sum. It reflects the value of the woman and the seriousness of the commitment being made. The expectation is clear: if a man chooses to engage with a woman intimately, he must be prepared to embrace her fully as his wife.
Protecting the Dignity of Women
The Bible’s intent to safeguard the institution of marriage serves as a barrier against the rampant irresponsibility we often witness today. Many men treat women as mere objects of desire rather than as beloved daughters of God deserving of respect and honour. This attitude leads to countless heartbreaks, single-parent households, and children growing up without the stability of a family unit.
God designed marriage to be a source of blessing and stability. Children, viewed as a heritage and a blessing, thrive best in secure family environments where both parents are committed to their welfare. When men neglect their responsibilities, it subjects women and children to hardship, shame, and emotional turmoil.
A Call to Action
As members of the Christian community, we must hold ourselves to higher standards. Our relationships should reflect our faith, demonstrating love, commitment, and responsibility. Their sanctity should be respected and valued, ensuring that we do not engage in relationships without the intention of marriage.
To the men reading this: if you have been careless in your interactions with women, it is time to reconsider your actions. True manhood is demonstrated by taking responsibility for your actions and honouring the women you engage with.
Let us strive to build a culture that reflects God's design for marriage—a culture rooted in commitment and accountability. We must support one another in making wise decisions that uplift our children and strengthen our families.
Finally, remember that every life matters, and our choices have lasting impacts. Let’s honour God in our relationships, uphold the dignity of women, and foster families marked by love and stability.
May God bless You
