Traders Angered By Soaring Tax Rates, Ready To Close Their Businesses

The new tax measures implemented by the government, particularly the clearing of goods from Mombasa, have caused dissatisfaction among the Kacita Uganda business community and traders.

They argue that this has greatly inconvenienced their businesses, especially those involved in the trade of Mable tiles and other commodities, resulting in financial losses during the clearing process.

Additionally, they oppose the government's emphasis on the "buy Uganda build Uganda" initiative, as they believe it is neglecting locally manufactured goods in favour of Chinese products.

As a result, they are prepared to either go on strike or close their businesses after the Nam summit.

Ugandan traders involved in the trade of tiles, clothes, and other sectors, along with KACITA Uganda, have expressed their discontent with the government's imposed tax on clearing goods from Mombasa. They feel deeply disappointed with URA and the government for making decisions regarding tax increments without involving the traders, especially considering the negative impact it will have on Ugandan businesses.

Thadeus Musoke, the chairperson of KACITA, highlighted that they appealed to URA to refrain from clearing containers from Mombasa.

They provided several reasons that could potentially impede the trading activities of businesses. Nevertheless, KACITA has now written a letter to both URA and the government, expressing their refusal towards all the implemented measures.

The government has been strongly encouraged to have the Chinese work independently and Ugandan traders adopt a different approach due to their dissatisfaction with the government's lack of responsiveness.

Meanwhile, traders have accused the Chinese of interfering in Ugandan businesses to the point of attempting to surpass all local enterprises, even though their products are of poor quality quality and lack style.

They have appealed to the government to warn the Chinese to focus on their companies rather than wanting to overtake trader’s businesses or else they are ready to leave their work

Ntale Edward Chairperson of Kampala Arcade Traders said they are ready to meet the commissioner general to discuss these matters affecting the traders mostly in Kampala.
