Uganda Christian University has intensified preparations for this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo, with organizers placing strong emphasis on youth involvement, spiritual reflection, and national healing under the theme “Christ Our Peace: Breaking the Walls, Healing the Nations.”

Every year on June 3rd, millions of pilgrims gather at Namugongo to commemorate the Uganda Martyrs, young Christian converts who chose faith over fear and paid the ultimate price during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II between 1885 and 1887.

Over the years, the annual celebration has grown into one of Africa’s largest religious gatherings, attracting pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond.

This is not the first time Uganda Christian University has taken the lead in organizing the national Anglican Martyrs Day celebrations.

The institution previously hosted the celebrations in 2013, under arrangements made by the Church of Uganda’s House of Bishops, which periodically entrusts its provincial university with the responsibility of leading the historic commemoration.

At Uganda Christian University’s main campus in Mukono, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Rev. Assoc. Prof. John Kitayimbwa, who also chairs the organizing committee, revealed that preparations are already in high gear ahead of the national event.

Rev. Mulindwa explained that this year’s celebration will go beyond ceremony, focusing deeply on the spiritual meaning of the martyrs’ sacrifice and its relevance to modern society.

The university further revealed that young people will play a central role in the celebrations, with students actively participating in the mass choir, scripture readings, liturgical presentations, and special youth programs designed to inspire faith and unity.

Organizers also called upon Christians and the general public to actively participate in preparations, particularly choir rehearsals currently taking place at UCU Mukono, St. Francis Chapel Makerere, and Namugongo Anglican Shrine.

As the organizers of the event, UCU through the vice chancellor, Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to delivering a fully prepared venue, with key upgrades including improved water supply, renovation of washrooms, repair of perimeter walls, and enhancement of walkways and access roads.

He also outlined plans to elevate the pilgrims’ experience through the installation of digital billboards to broadcast proceedings, alongside solar-powered lighting to strengthen security at the site.

As Uganda prepares to once again honour the courage, faith, and sacrifice of the Uganda Martyrs, Uganda Christian University says this year’s celebrations will serve as a call for spiritual renewal, reconciliation, and peace at a time when society continues to seek healing and unity.
