UNRA Secures Land For Lot 2 Of Kampala Jinja Fly Over

The Electoral Commission has handed over its former head office on Jinja Road in Kampala to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).

The land, housing the former EC offices on Plot 55 Jinja Road has been earmarked for the construction of the Kampala-Jinja flyover. UNRA will demolish the buildings to clear the way for the second phase of the Kampala Flyover works.
Amidst the early morning downpour, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission handed over documents showing ownership of the former EC head office located at Plot 55 Jinja Road, to officials of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).

This has been the home of the Electoral Commission for 26 years from where they have conducted five national elections, among other activities
Justice Byabakama says the EC and UNRA have exchanged all the relevant documents and UNRA has duly compensated the electoral body to the tune of 23 billion Uganda shillings

The new temporary EC offices are now on the 7th Street Industrial area as the institution works on moving to its permanent home in Lubowa.
The former EC office land occupies about 1.09 hectares and has been handed to the contract manager of the Kampala Flyover Project Lot On, Engineer Lawrence Pario who is also the head of bridges and structures in UNRA. Pario said that they will now embark on Lot 2 of the project.

In Lot One of the Flyover projects, the contractor has done drainage channels, the Flyover at Clock Tower, and Pedestrian Bridges among others. According to Lawrence Pario, Lot Two will see the widening of the road, and bus terminal among others. These are all meant to smoothen traffic flow in and outside the city
Lot 2 of the project is expected to be completed in 48 months. However, UNRA is yet to procure the contractor. Engineer Pario also says they will need an additional $200M to work on the interface between the flyover and the proposed Standard Gauge Railway line.
