10 Women Have Been Arrested For Carrying Out An Unlawful Protest

Police in wandegeya has arrested ten women for holding an unlawful protest in Kalerwe. The women say they came out because they cannot celebrate women's day when their husbands are still in jail, in violation of their human rights.

Before coming out to protest, these women who call themselves Ugandan Women first briefed journalists, saying that they cannot celebrate women's day when their husbands are still in jail. Besides, they say there is a wanton violation of human rights going on in the country.

According to Nyanzi, women have been neglected even when there are many women in top government leadership positions. The protesters say these women are working for their benefit, living out the rest of the women.

They are asking the government to stop the arbitrary arrests and also call upon fellow women to stand up and demand an end to the violation of human rights.

Before they were picked up, the women chained themselves and moved slowly around Kalerwe demonstrating and calling for the unconditional release of their husbands. This caused a traffic jam in the area.

Police from Wandegeya moved in and blocked the women around Kalerwe market, stopped them for a while but the women were defiant.

Police later arrested them and drove them to wandegeya police station where they have been detained.

The police spokesperson Kampala and metropolitan area Patrick Onyango says 10 women have been arrested and charged with inciting violence. A commuter taxi with registration number UBF705B suspected to have carried the women was impounded.
