The incident according to the village chairperson only identified as Shakilah took place at around 10 pm.

“Yesterday evening at around 10:40 pm, we have a child who had a mental problem, here hacked his siblings and ran away, we are now here preparing to see what happens next.”

“This act is very bad, the boy hacking his siblings, three are now dead while the two are in hospital.”

The suspect has been identified as a 19-year-old Mutegeki Brian who the locals say after committing the act disappeared.

According to Mugenyi Steven, the Rwengoma chairperson of Local council two, the suspect has long been struggling with mental illness.

“This act has hurt us so much to see that the child can hack his siblings, but we are told that he has a mental illness and we condemn this act.”

Those who died on the spot include Kagaba Charles aged 7 and Catherine aged two and a half years.

It’s also alleged that the third child died shortly after reaching the hospital.

Namatovu Florence, the sister of the suspect, narrated to COU family tv what transpired before the victims met their death.

“Yesterday he first told them to go to the centre to buy some food where they even bought food for him and brought it, at night while they were sleeping, he got a knife and started cutting them.”

“Me I was in the night prayer when I heard the news.”

Muhumuza Richard, the Fort Portal Central division mayor challenged locals to always take all people they suspect to be mentally sick instead of keeping them with them in their homes.

“Always take people who have mental illiness to the hospital rather than staying with them, this helps to avoid such incidences.”

“When you see someone with a mental problem, take them to the rehab so that they can stop killing their fellows.”

The residents described the gruesome act as scary that had taken years to happen in their area.

“This act was very bad and so scaring.”

In the statement released by the Rwenzori West police spokesperson, investigations are already underway while the hunt for the suspect is ongoing.
