2025 Broadcast and Digital Media Convention Kicks Off in Kampala with focus on AI Regulation and Media Growth

Today, Kampala hosted the formal opening of the highly anticipated 2025 Broadcast and Digital Media Convention, the premier event dedicated to shaping the future of media in Uganda and beyond. The event was officiated by Maj. (Rtd.) Jessica Alupo, Uganda’s Vice President, who emphasized the importance of digital media and the government’s commitment to fostering innovation through policy and legislation.

During her address, Vice President Alupo highlighted the government's efforts to expand digital platforms and ensure responsible use of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). She encouraged stakeholders to support ongoing initiatives that promote digital growth while advocating for regulation to ensure safe and ethical application of AI in the media landscape.

Key discussions also focused on the telecom sector, with Hon. Godfrey Kabbyanga, the State Minister for National Guidance, outlining new requirements for license renewal. He emphasized that telecom providers must now demonstrate at least 90% coverage across the country to qualify for license renewal, a move aimed at expanding access and improving service quality nationwide.

The convention also saw calls from government officials for increased funding support for the broadcast and digital media sectors. Minister Kabbyanga urged industry players to adopt self-regulation practices to minimize the need for government intervention, ensuring a balanced and sustainable media environment.

The 2025 convention underscores Uganda's strategic move toward modernizing its media ecosystem amid technological advancements, with a clear focus on responsible regulation and participation from all industry stakeholders.
