21 Hoima Women And Youth Enterprise Groups Get Shs118 Million

At least twenty (21) enterprises, including seven women enterprises and fourteen (14) youth enterprises have received 118 million shillings from the Uganda Women Enterprises Programme (UWEP) and the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) respectively.

The funds from these government-run empowerment programmes are intended to boost the enterprises to improve the livelihoods of the members.

The Hoima Resident District Commissioner (RCC), Michael Kyakashari Muramira, presided over the disbursement of funds in Hoima City.

The Hoima Resident District Commissioner (RCC), Michael Kyakashari Muramira, has raised concern over the management of previous funds disbursed by the Government to the Uganda Women Enterprises Programme (UWEP) and the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP).

The RCC raised his concerns while presiding over the disbursement of funds to the two programmes at Hoima youth centre. He noted expressed disappointment that the two programmes had failed to recover 100 per cent of the money from previous beneficiaries between 2014 and 2020.

The RCC informed the beneficiaries of the new funds that the money is meant to help them get out of poverty and transform their livelihoods and urged them to pay back since it is a revolving fund that is supposed to be given to others as well.

RCC Kyakashari appealed for mindset change, saying that it has kept even the beneficiaries in poverty.

Anthony Ayesiga, the focal person of the programmes in Hoima said that they have disbursed 84 million shillings to 14 youth enterprises and 34 million shillings to 7 women enterprises. He explained that these funds were recovered from previous beneficiaries in different enterprise groups.

Ayesiga noted with concern that the empowerment programmes and funds have not yet positively impacted the communities due to a poor mindset.

The beneficiaries thanked the government for the funds and pledged to use the money to change their household incomes and transform their lives.

Since the two programs were introduced in 2013, 104 women enterprise groups have received 739 million shillings and recovered 157 million shillings while 1.35 billion shillings have been disbursed to youth enterprises and only  390 million shillings have been recovered.
