30kph Speed Limit In Urban Areas Affecting Mobility:Enforce Laws Against Motorists Who Don’t Stop At Pedestrian Crossings – Drivers.Commissioner Assures Drivers Of Better Service Delivery
The 30 km/h speed limit set by traffic police in the city has led people in different sectors, especially transport, to complain that it’s too slow and could disrupt their movement and work. These are also asking that this speed only apply in specific areas like schools, markets, hospitals, and other similarly busy places so that other road networks are exempted.
This was revealed at the Ministry of Works and Transport offices in Kampala today.
After traffic police strictly enforced the laws and introduced the 2025 traffic regulation requiring vehicles to drive at only 30 kilometers per hour in designated areas and in places with heavy pedestrian traffic, motorists have complained that this is disrupting their movement.
They said this speed limit should apply in areas like schools, hospitals, churches, markets, and many others.
The traffic laws shouldn’t be limited to just those places but should also be implemented with standards because accidents also often result from reckless driving.
Transporters asked for operations to crack down boda boda riders who ride recklessly, as well as those who don’t stop at busy pedestrian crossing points. Overhead pedestrian crossing signs that are clear and visible so everyone can see were requested to be put up.
Road users like drivers are to be sensitized in a language they understand so they can grasp these laws.
There should be separate speed limits for village roads and city roads, including tarmac and murram roads and assurance that road signs are clearly visible.
These are the penalties given to motorists like car drivers and boda riders.
Speaking about this law, commissioner general Winston Katushabe said this
