7 MUK Students Arrested Over Guild Elections Demonstration
Police in Wandegeya have arrested 7 Makerere University students; 6 males, and one female for holding an illegal assembly. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson confirmed that the students were arrested for planning a demonstration.
The students were demonstrating against the alleged indefinite suspension of Byaruhanga Isaac, and Arnold Muganga, from the University for engaging in an unsanctioned guild presidential campaign debate known as Kimeza Which resulted in a violent altercation and left one student hospitalized.
At least 7 Makerere University students including NUP’s flag bearer for the 89th guild presidency, Margaret Nattabi, organized a press conference at the guild canteen which the university administration blocked. They were forced to carry it outside the university shifting to the Emerald Hotel. During the press statement, the students were demanding for a lift of the suspension of two candidates,
Isaac Byaruhanga and Arnold Muganga, reconsidering the disqualification of the two from the Friday elections by tomorrow's close of business. Margaret Nattabi and Sulaiman Namwoza are the guild aspirants who were kicked out of the guild race
Last week by the chairperson electoral commission over staging a presidential debate at Mitchell Hall Known as Kimeza. The Kimeza resulted in a scuffle that left one Robert Sserunjogi, a student from the College of natural sciences hospitalized at a university hospital.
Nattabi requested that the institution's management explain their disqualification, saying they followed all the guidelines before holding the debate. In addition, the students condemned the university's decision to conduct online elections. The press conference however turned chaotic after Wandegeya police ambushed the congregation and arrested the students. They were taken to Wandegeya police station on accusations of organizing an unlawful assembly.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango Said that the students threatened to demonstrate. He went on to assure the public that the police are against hooliganism. Makerere University is set to hold its 89th guild elections this Friday, 14 April 2022.
