Activists Task Government To Prioritize Tb In Budget Allocations
Uganda Stop TB Partnership, an NGO helping in the fight against Tuberculosis and other stakeholders that are fighting to eliminate the disease by 2030 and has called upon the government through the Ministry of Health to increase financial support towards the fight against TB in order to save Ugandans from this disease.
Statistics show that over 30 people succumb to the disease every day and the Ministry of Health together with these NGOs is planning on sensitizing people in villages about this disease since it has been realized that one of the biggest challenges is people in rural areas lack knowledge about it.
One-day training for TB activists was held at Pretoria Hotel in Mbale City over the weekend. The attendees of the training included District Health Officers, VHTs, leaders from local government, and cultural and opinion leaders.
Stakeholders in attendance expressed that over 30 people die of TB on a daily basis hence urging the government to prioritize TB during budget allocation and also empowering Village health teams VHTs of the campaign to stamp out the scourge in Uganda to succeed.
Dr. Damali Waiswa the regional TB focal person for Bukedi and Bugisu revealed that TB claims 34 lives of Ugandans daily and asked the government to extend financial support towards the fight against this killer disease.
Uganda is aiming to end TB and Leprosy diseases by 2030 however according to Dr Paul Isiko the executive director of Uganda Stop TB Partnership if the campaign to eliminate TB from Uganda is to succeed, there should be goodwill by all Ugandans to partner with the government so as to realize success in this noble cause.
Meanwhile, Michael Higen Bore the Butaleja district chairperson stressed that VHTs are a vital section in the fight against TB and call for an increment in their remuneration.
Mutonyi Aisha Mugoya the chairperson for VHTs in the Northern Division of Mbale city revealed the need to intensify awareness among the local community as most of them are green about the signs and treatment of TB.
