Ankole Cup 2026 Kicks Off With 13 Districts in Bushenyi Leaders Tout Sports as Driver of Unity and Economic Growth: Youth Urged to Tap into Opportunities as Tournament Gains Momentum

The sixth edition of the Ankole Cup is set to kick off on June 6, 2026, bringing together 13 districts from across the Ankole sub-region in a tournament aimed at promoting talent, youth empowerment, and regional integration.

The 2026 Ankole Cup will officially begin in Bushenyi District with an opening match between Bushenyi and Sheema District. The tournament will run from June 6th to August 16th, featuring teams from 13 districts.

While addressing the press in Kampala, the organising committee chairperson, Osborn Turyasingula, confirmed that the tournament will start with a curtain-raiser match between Members of Parliament and journalists before the official opener.

Leaders say the inter-district competition is not only about football but also about driving economic growth and strengthening unity within the region, with increased activity expected to benefit local businesses, especially in the hospitality sector.

Adrine Katusiime Mwebesa noted that the tournament will attract visitors from different areas, creating opportunities for networking, investment, and community development.

Buhweju Member of Parliament Francis Mwijukye emphasised the need to transform perceptions about football, urging young people to embrace sports as a viable source of income rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

Meanwhile, National Female Youth MP-elect Mercy Kanyesigye called on young people and stakeholders to actively participate, noting that the tournament provides a platform to showcase talent and build meaningful connections.

As part of the build-up, organisers have scheduled the Ankole Cup Dinner on May 19, 2026, at Hotel Africana, aimed at mobilising support and celebrating the tournament’s growth.

The Ankole Cup continues to evolve as a key platform for nurturing talent, promoting unity, and stimulating regional development, with expectations high for this year’s edition.
