Annual Sports Day Showcases Student Talents: Call Made for Greater Government Support for Sports.
St. Mary’s College Rushoroza has reaffirmed its commitment to holistic education through its annual sports day, with students competing in more than 11 sporting disciplines.
School leaders say the event is designed to identify and nurture talent while promoting discipline, teamwork, and physical fitness alongside academic excellence.
Speaking during the event, the headteacher of St. Mary’s College Rushoroza, Christopher Monday, said the annual sports day is aimed at identifying and nurturing students’ talents while instilling discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
He emphasized that the school remains committed to promoting sports alongside academics because education should produce well-rounded individuals capable of excelling both in class and in their talents.
Onesmus Ainembabazi, a student, expressed excitement over being named Sportsman of the Year and thanked the school administration for consistently organizing the annual sports day, saying it provides learners with an opportunity to discover, develop, and showcase their talents.
Ainembabazi attributed his achievement to determination and persistence, saying he did not allow last year’s disappointment to discourage him after failing to win the award.
The chief guest, Eng. Joram Bwamable, proprietor and CEO of Macro Hardware and Macro Engineering Services, voiced that local sports need to be supported as they transform lives, families, and communities.
He noted that many countries have invested in sports, with talented athletes becoming international ambassadors.
He appealed to the Ministry of Education and Sports to encourage schools to introduce a wide variety of sporting disciplines, saying this approach gives every learner an opportunity to excel.
