Asset Declaration Defaulters To Face The Law

Two state ministers and four members of parliament are set to face prosecution after failing to declare their assets. The Director of the Leadership Code at the Inspectorate of Government’s office has confirmed that those who fail to comply with the asset declaration requirements will face legal action.

In an interview, Joram Magezi, the director of the Leadership Code, emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in public offices, as this plays a key role in curbing corruption among public leaders.

Joram Magezi, the director of the Leadership Code at the Inspectorate of Government, has revealed that leaders who fail to comply with the Leadership Code will be prosecuted at the Leadership Code Tribunal.

The Leadership Code Act of 2002 mandates that leaders, including public officials, declare their incomes, assets, and liabilities to ensure accountability and promote good governance. This law is designed to foster transparency in public service and curb corruption.

According to Joram Magezi, accountability is crucial in maintaining transparency and good governance to ensure resource management is followed up.

Magezi also stressed the importance of conducting thorough research to identify and address the root causes of corruption by examining the underlying factors that fuel such practices.

The Director confirmed that all leaders from ministries, departments, and agencies who have failed to submit their asset declarations will be referred to the Leadership Code Tribunal by May 2025. Similarly, leaders from local governments who have not complied will also face prosecution, with their cases being submitted by June 2025.
