At Least 72 Opposition MPS Sign Against Shs.100m Token
The Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, has implored the public to desist from pushing their respective legislators into accepting the Shs. 100m token being handed to a section of MPs by the president, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
This comes as at least 72 opposition MPs have signed a resolution condemning the allocation of the money as a sign of their commitment to the public, disassociating themselves from the money, and challenging the office of the IGG to recover all payments and prosecute the recipients.
This was while the caucus addressed the media at parliament today.
It is now 7 days since the country received the news of the SHS. 100m each being paid out to a section of National Resistance Movement MPs and some opposition and independents through classified funding, which President Museveni confirmed, defending it as patriotic work.
In light of reaffirming their stand condemning the money, at least 72 opposition MPs have so far appended their signatures confirming their commitment to the public, disassociating themselves from the money, and challenging the office of the IGG to recover all payments and prosecute the recipients.
Ssenyoni further implored Ugandans to desist from pushing their legislators into accepting the money, as this will blur the vision of fighting corruption.
Addressing the president’s accusations that the opposition is putting their focus on the 100m and not speaking up against foreign funding alleged to be having an influence on Ugandan politics, the LOP challenged the president to expose individuals who are swindling foreign funds.
With the money being defended by some NRM MPs as funds intended to aid the monitoring of government programs, Ssenyonyi also urged them to enlighten the opposition, emphasizing the act as theft.
This is, however, not the first instance of 'cash payout’ sagas at Parliament.
