Besigye's Case Adjourned To February 20th Following Health Concerns

Dr. Kizza Besigye appeared in court today after missing a previous hearing due to health concerns. According to reports from the courtroom, the judge adjourned the case until February 20th, emphasizing that the human rights violation charges should be handled according to the law and relevant authorities.

Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, is facing charges related to a 2022 protest over high commodity prices, with his supporters claiming that the charges are politically motivated.

Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition figure appeared at Buganda Road Court today after missing the previous hearing due to health concerns.

Reports indicate that Besigye has been on a hunger strike for a week. His health has been visibly affected, with witnesses noting that he appeared to be trembling, unable to close his mouth, and experiencing frequent blinking.

His lawyer, Erias Lukwago, expressed serious concerns about Besigye's deteriorating condition, highlighting that the harsh prison conditions may be worsening his illness.

During the court proceedings, Erias Lukwago and other lawyers argued that the court's decision to hold Dr. Kizza Besigye in custody was unlawful, citing Section A1. They passionately contended that the court had overstepped its jurisdiction, violating human rights as outlined in Section 5.

A dramatic turn unfolded in the courtroom today. Despite the presentation of evidence, the judge adjourned Dr. Kizza Besigye's hearing, citing the need to address human rights abuses promptly.

However, Dr. Besigye's lawyers requested a shorter adjournment due to his deteriorating health, leading to a heated exchange between the lawyers and the judge. The disagreement over the adjournment sparked controversy in the courtroom.

In an interview with reporters, Erias Lukwago, Dr. Kizza Besigye's lawyer, strongly denounced the warrant, highlighting its gross infringement on his client's fundamental rights.

Lukwago argued that the warrant violated Besigye's basic legal entitlements and emphasized the unjust nature of the actions taken against him.

He added that Dr. Besigye's bail is being disrespected since he is being restricted from accessing essential services and family visits. They are prepared to take further action to ensure his life is protected.
