Bishop Mbitse Warns Against Land Grabbing as New Church Is Planted in Kisoro: Call for Unity, Integrity and Responsible Living Among Christians. Family Donates Land as Diocese Expands Church
The Bishop of Muhabura Diocese, Godfrey Mbitse, has warned against increasing cases of land grabbing, urging Christians to uphold integrity and unity, as he presided over the planting of a new church in Kisoro District.
St. John’s Bwera Church of Uganda has officially been established under Gisorora Church of Uganda Parish in Kisoro District, marking a significant step in expanding church outreach in the area.
The new church, located in Kanyabukungu Village, Nyakabande Sub-county, has now become the sixth outstation under Gisorora Parish, joining Gitare, Gakenke, Busozi, Kigoma, and Kabira.
The planting ceremony was marked by a church service held at the site, during which four infants were baptised in a sermon drawn from the book of Mark 10:13.
While preaching, Bishop Godfrey Mbitse condemned individuals involved in grabbing church land, warning that such acts are illegal and punishable by law, even as others continue to donate land willingly for God’s work.
He urged parents to raise their children in strong Christian values, noting that baptism must be followed by discipline and commitment to church teachings.
The Bishop commended the family of John Gahuriro for donating land for the church, describing the gesture as a lasting legacy of faith and service to the community.
He further called on Christians to embrace unity, love, and cooperation, warning that divisions in families are often driven by negative influences and a departure from God’s guidance.
Bishop Mbitse also cautioned against reckless borrowing, saying excessive debt is leading to loss of property and deepening poverty among families.
He emphasised respect for one another, reminding believers that judgment belongs to God, while also encouraging hard work balanced with rest to avoid exhaustion.
Meanwhile, the Archdeacon of Gisorora Archdeaconry, Enock Bahati, raised concern over politicians who abandon the church after elections, urging leaders to remain connected to the community through active participation in church life.
A family representative, Kenneth Lwego Gahuriro, revealed that the land donation was inspired by the need to bring church services closer to the elderly who struggle to travel long distances.
He also echoed calls against land grabbing, urging the public to respect church property.
The establishment of St. John’s Bwera Church is expected to strengthen access to worship and deepen faith within the community, as the diocese continues to expand its mission across the region.
