Boda Riders Must Comply To The Road Requirements - Deputy KMP Traffic Commander
RITAH
Speaking at the boda safety campaign today at Kiswa Hall community Bugolobi, the Deputy KMP traffic Commander Opos Justine has appealed to all boda riders around Kampala to adhere to the road safety requirements when it comes to road usage in order to ease the work of traffic police and their operations on their duties.
He says the police will continue to curb all those riders who are against the rules and regulations when it comes to road usage.
Every day during operations around Kampala and other places, boda bodas riders get arrested by the state police due to lack of requirements which permit them to ride on the roads, but also due to breaking the law that is over speeding, carrying more than one passenger and driving without a helmet and this has left some jobless while others are taken into police custody. The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police traffic Commander opos Justine expound on these operations.
He adds that most boda riders give excuses as to why they do not put on helmets and yet it’s for their safety.
Motorcycle riders have the highest mortality rates caused by motor vehicle collisions and most fatalities in traffic accidents are due to head injuries helmet usage levels among riders and passengers are still very low, yet this is one of the most important ways to protect one’s head from injury in case of anything.
Today over 250 boda boda riders gathered at Kiswa Hall Bugolobi to be sensitized on the uptake and utilization of helmets among riders to reduce the accidents which often lead to injuries.
The Safe Way Right organization is one which aims at ensuring that all boda boda riders are sensitized on the use of helmets in all divisions in Kampala and other districts. Susan Tumuhairwe, program coordinator, safe way right noted that most of the helmets used among the riders are not the required standard, and as an organization, they decided to solve this issue by freely providing new helmets to the riders in order to protect them in times of accidents.
Some of the boda boda leaders from different divisions have assented to the misuse of helmets while riding on the roads and since most of them have been victims, they are ready to start religiously using helmets and to extend the facts to their other colleagues.
