Bulambuli Landslide: Five Bodies Retrieved From Rabbles

At least five bodies have so far been retrieved by a team of Red Cross and other volunteers from the rabbles following a landslide that hit Masugu Village, Buluganya Sub County in Bulambuli district.

Seven members of the same family reportedly died in the landslides that have ravaged several villages in Bulambuli district.
Residents and a team from the Uganda Red Cross have embarked retrieving the bodies of people who were killed in the Thursday disaster that followed the heavy down pour that hit the district.

Areas affected include the villages of Masugu, Namakere, Kagulu, and Namagugu in Buluganya parish, Buluganya sub-county.

The Bulambuli district resident commissioner Stanley Bayole has confirmed that five bodies have so far been retrieved from the mud where they were covered after a heavy down pour that lasted for about hours’ yesterday.

Bayole says there is urgent need for government’s intervention to have the affected persons relocated to safer areas for the safety of their lives.

The disaster comes days away from back to school time. Schools have been affected. Teachers say this will affect school resumption. Learners across the country are expected to report back to school next week.

The victims of the landslides hope government can come in a hand as many are homeless and without food and other essential commodities.
The displaced people have been advised to seek shelter at Masungu primary school. The Mount Elgon region that straddles Kenya and Uganda often receives high rainfall, which devastates villages and kills people on mountain slopes.
In 2019, the government relocated landslide victims in the landslide-prone areas in the districts of Bududa, Manafwa Sironko to Bulambuli where it constructed houses.
