Business Remains Slow At Katuna Border Post With Rwanda
The Katuna border post between Uganda and Rwanda was reopened over one and a half years ago but traders at the previously busy border post and the surrounding area continue to struggle. Rwanda closed its side of the border in February 2019 due to unresolved issues between the governments of both countries.
However, on 7th March 2022, the Katuna border crossing was finally reopened, allowing passenger vehicles to travel between Uganda and Rwanda. There was hope that this reopening would revitalize the once-vibrant business area. However, there is disappointment for the local business community.
Kellen Rwangabo, a businesswoman who owns rentals at the Katuna border, recalled the thriving business before the border closure in February 2019. Unfortunately, the reopening of the border is yet to bring dividends. Rwangabo expressed dismay that the customers from Rwanda who used to frequent her shop no longer come, leading to a significant decline in sales.
Even the weekly market, popularly known as the "world market," has lost its shine since the border closure. Traders and buyers from both Uganda and Rwanda used to flock to this market, but its vibrancy has significantly diminished.
Traders at the market shared their stories of struggling businesses, saying that there has not been any noticeable improvement even after the border reopened. Two traders, Joseph Arinda and Alex Karambuzi, echoed these sentiments, saying that the times have been challenging.
Although the situation remains grim for local businesses, truck drivers say they have seen some positive impact from the reopening of the Katuna border. The improved conditions have enhanced their work efficiency and operations.
Elvis Nzeirwe, the Katuna Town Council LC3 chairperson, sheds light on the continued slow business growth, primarily due to restrictions on small-scale traders in Rwanda.
He explains that only a few vendors who illegally use the porous borders can conduct transactions in Katuna.
The outlook for business at the Katuna border town remains bleak, with a significant number of previously well-stocked shops now closed. Traders now find themselves wasting on hope and divine intervention for a better future.
