Call For National Action On Duchenne In Uganda

An estimated 3,600 to 5,000 children in Uganda are living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare and life-limiting genetic condition that primarily affects boys.

As the world observes World Duchenne Awareness Day, local advocates are urging the Ugandan government to take immediate action by prioritizing Duchenne in the country’s national healthcare and disability strategies.

As the world comes together to commemorate World Duchenne Awareness Day, the Sapphire Africa Foundation is joining families, advocates, and the global Duchenne community to shine a spotlight on this often-overlooked but devastating condition.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakening, typically diagnosed in early childhood. Without intervention, the condition can lead to severe complications and reduced life expectancy

Statistics show that Duchenne affects about 1 in every 3,600 to 5,000 male births worldwide, but in Uganda, most cases go undetected due to inadequate screening and a lack of specialized care.

Among the voices was Ronah Carolyn Kimpaye, a mother and Duchenne advocate, who shared her deeply personal story of raising a child with the condition.

The Foundation is now calling on policymakers to include Duchenne in Uganda’s broader healthcare and disability strategies, advocating for early screening, accessible treatment, and dedicated funding.
