Celebrating a Decade of Innovation: How SafeBoda Transformed Uganda’s Boda Boda Industry

In 2014, a simple yet powerful idea took root on the bustling streets of Kampala—SafeBoda. Over the past ten years, this homegrown startup has revolutionized Uganda’s boda boda industry, improving safety, professionalism, and economic opportunities for thousands of riders and passengers alike.

At the heart of this journey are three visionary co-founders—Ricky Rapa Thomson, Maxime Dieudonné, and Alastair Sussock—whose dedication and innovation built a community with a shared goal: a safer, more dignified, and better-organized boda boda sector. Ricky’s personal story of resilience, from riding to leading, embodies the spirit of SafeBoda's mission to transform lives and mobility.

Starting from a modest Kyebando office with humble beginnings, SafeBoda introduced GPS dispatching, safety standards like helmets, and community-focused driver empowerment. Their commitment to trust and quality helped them expand into neighboring countries, ultimately attracting global investors such as Gojek, Allianz X, and Google.

Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, SafeBoda persisted, evolving into a multifaceted mobility platform with services spanning boda bodas, car-hailing, and deliveries. Today, under the leadership of CEO Rob Sanford and COO Frida Mwaura, SafeBoda continues to grow sustainably in Uganda and Kenya, creating jobs, supporting driver livelihoods, and sparking innovation across Africa.

More than a business, SafeBoda’s story is about community, resilience, and impact—serving millions of riders and passengers, training thousands of drivers, and fostering a safer urban environment. As SafeBoda celebrates this landmark anniversary, it’s clear that their legacy is not just about rides, but about building a better future for Africa.
