Church of Uganda Launches Emergency Humanitarian Response for Landslide-Affected Communities in Sebei Region

The Church of Uganda has launched an urgent humanitarian response to support communities affected by the recent landslides in the Sebei Region, Eastern Uganda. The disaster claimed lives and left many families without shelter, food, and essential household items.

800 households across Bukwo, Kween, and Kapchorwa districts, USD 149,000, provided by ACT Alliance through the Church of Uganda’s Directorate of Household and Community Transformation (HCT) under the Rapid Response Fund

The intervention was officially flagged off this morning in Kapchorwa by Rt. Rev. Paul Kiptoo Masaba, Bishop of Sebei Diocese, in the presence of Rev. Agaba Andrew, Director of HCT, and district leaders from Kapchorwa, Kween, and Bukwo.

Speaking at the flag-off, Bishop Masaba emphasized that the Church cannot remain silent in the face of suffering. He affirmed that the response goes beyond material aid to include spiritual care and counseling for affected families.

Rev. Agaba Andrew noted that the initiative reflects the Church’s broader commitment to community resilience and compassionate action.

Food supplies (maize flour, beans, cooking oil, iodized salt, rice, sugar, and soya porridge for children) and essential non-food items (mattresses, blankets, jerrycans, basins, sandals, solar lights, and sanitary materials for women and girls).

Plans to renovate shelters for selected households beginning January 2026; 200 households will receive multi-purpose cash assistance to purchase clothing, in line with Sphere Standards.

Distribution of water storage drums, purification tablets, and hygiene kits; ongoing community sensitization led by the Diocesan Health Coordinator.

Mental health services and counseling through referrals and coordinated support with partners, including FHI, the Red Cross, the Ministry of Health, and district health teams. A psychosocial mobile clinic is planned for early January, with clinical assessments underway. Church staff will conduct family counseling in holding centers and through home visits over the next two to three months.

Bishop Masaba affirmed the Church’s commitment to walk with affected communities in the Sebei Region, collaborating with local leaders and humanitarian partners to rebuild lives and strengthen resilience against future emergencies.
