Constructors Urged To Set Up Standard Building That Also Favor Peoples With Disabilities
Hon. Edward Katumba Wamala. Minister of Works and Transport while addressing the press today has assured Ugandans that the government is working together with the Ministry of Planning to ensure all buildings in the country are on standard and favourable for all users including people with disabilities.
He says that most of the buildings constructed in Uganda are not in line with the principles and laws in the National Building Control Act put by the government.
According to an Act to consolidate, harmonise and amend the law relating to the erection of buildings, to provide for building standards, establish a National Building Review Board and Building Committees, promote and ensure planned, decent and safe building structures that are developed in harmony with the environment, Hon. Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport says that this law is not being considered by some of the builders and owners in the country whose buildings are not safe for Ugandans mostly people with disabilities.
Gen. Katumba adds that some of the persons in Uganda have not been satisfied with the decisions made by the building committee, in terms of plan approval by the national development committee and insuring of building permits.
The Building Control Regulations, 2020. (Under section 52 of the Building Control Act, 2013, if a person engages an architect or engineer to design or supervise a building or be a part of a building, the building operations shall satisfy the requirements of the Regulations,
Hon. Katumba Wamala says that most of the buildings have not adopted this law since many end up killing people.
The National Building Review Board which Ensures that the design and construction of buildings and utilities to which the public has access caters to Persons with Disabilities has been awarded with prices for their achievements.
