COU Clears Air About The Namirembe And Luwero Diocesan Leadership Transition
Over the past week, there have been misleading reports circulating in the media about the transition in Church of Uganda Diocesan leadership, with some defining the situation as a crisis. COU want to firmly emphasize that these reports are false and should be disregarded with the utmost contempt they deserve.
While it is true that there are ongoing processes, for transitions in the Dioceses of Namirembe and Luwero, the Church of Uganda wishes to inform the general public especially the Christians, and partners of the two Dioceses that these transitions are normal, and the established nomination and election procedures are being followed.
But Namirembe Diocese: The House of Bishops sitting at the Provincial Secretariat in Namirembe on 4th October 2023, received the report from the Nominations Committee and set up an ad hoc committee to review the nomination process. The House of Bishops will meet again in November 2023 to receive the committee’s report and agree on the way forward.
And on the Luweero Diocese: Rt. Rev James William Ssebaggala was appointed caretaker Bishop to oversee the Diocese for a period of 8 months ending in March 2024. In the meantime, the process for fresh nominations will be undertaken.
COU wants to assure the Church that ministry is going well in the two Dioceses
