Devastating Downpour Ravages 5 Villages In Kikuube

A heavy downpour of hailstones characterized with strong winds last evening destroyed hectares of crop and fruit gardens in five villages in Buhima Sub County and Buhimba town council in Kikuube district.

A downpour containing hailstones that lasted for around two hours left a number of villages and close to 3000 households in Kikuube in dire need of relief support.

The villages of Kabanyansi, Kibabwemi North in Musaijamukuru East Parish, Kipoogo, Nyakabonge in Kinogozi parish, Buhimba Sub County and parts of Kabyanjeru village in Kigaaya East Ward Buhimba town council were most affected.

The hailstone was characterized by strong winds that blew off rooftops of more than 10 houses and destroyed crops and especially coffee, cassava, jackfruits, banana plantations.

Residents in the affected villages are now for relief support in terms of food and seeds from ministry of disaster and preparedness to help resuscitate the situation.

Amlan Tumusiime, the Kikuube RDC who is also the chairperson of disaster management committee noted that the incident was devastating.

He however attributed the devastating incident to climate change caused by environmental degradation and asked locals to vacate wetlands as well stop deforestation.

This is the first major disaster to happen in this area where hundreds of farmers have lost their crops.
