
Diocese of Northern Uganda: Resilience, Mission, and Community in the Anglican Heartland
The Diocese of Northern Uganda (DNU) — part of the Church of Uganda — has a storied history and a vibrant present. Created in 1961 from the Diocese of the Upper Nile, the diocese today anchors spiritual life and social support for communities across Gulu, Nwoya, Amuru, and Omoro.

The DNU has been led by a sequence of shepherds who helped steer the church through periods of growth, hardship, and renewal:

- Rt. Rev. Benoni Ogwal (1974–1989)

- Rt. Rev. Nelson Onono-Onweng (1998–2009)
- Rt. Rev. Johnson Gakumba (2009–2021)
- Rt. Rev. Godfrey Loum (2021–present)
Their leadership spans formative years, wartime suffering, and a sustained era of peacebuilding and development.
