Doctors Want Nutritionists In Government Hospitals

Nutritionists have urged government to appoint a nutritionist in every hospital in the country to help prevent diseases caused by malnutrition.

The say government has left the nutrition responsibility to inexperienced medics that can’t help patients in need of nutrition expertise.

According to a 2012 study by the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Uganda spends more than 525 billion on malnutrition, which mainly affects children under the age of five.

During the allied nutritionists association’s (ANA) first meeting to discuss the need to avert malnutrition challenges in the country, the deputy head of ANA Angella Natukunda, said Ugandans should be restored to a healthy diet.

Dr. Aisha Musaazi Ssebunya Nakitto, a nutritionist and lecturer at Victoria University, said that apart from children dying from malnutrition, those who survive and grow up are struggle with life.

According to nutritionists, it is important that government puts nutritionists in every hospital in the country.

Rwandembo Wilson, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Health urged them to work harder to make a difference.
