DP Asks Parliamnet To Pass The Anti-Homosexuality Bill

The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has summoned Parliament for a sitting on Wednesday 01st March 2023 a renewed debate on the Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

The Democratic Party (DP) has commended the move, saying that it was long overdue since there are many reports indicating that the vice is spreading.

The remarks were made by Fred Mukasa Mbidde, the DP National Vice President.

The DP National Vice President, Fred Mukasa Mbidde who addressed journalists at the party Kampala office on City House, urged Members of Parliament to ensure that they overwhelmingly pass the Anti-Homosexuality with the new opportunity that will be granted to them.

Parliament passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill which prohibits sexual relations between people of the same gender, in 2013. President Yoweri Museveni signed the Act into law on 24th February 2014. However, on 1st August 2014, the Constitutional Court nullified the law on the ground that Parliament passed it without a quorum.

Mbidde says Uganda should be counted among the 36 countries worldwide which criminalize same-sex relations.

He also asked the government to put in place strong measures in all schools to prevent the spread of homosexuality among students and tough action taken against anyone promoting the vice.

On the Karamoja iron sheet saga, DP urges the government to focus on the holistic development of the marginalized region rather than periodically sending relief to a region that is ironically rich in minerals such as gold and other natural resources.
