Effects Of River Nyamwamba Floods Frustrate Locals And Learners In Kasese

Prolonged effects of the disastrous Nyamwamba River floods mainly destroying people’s properties and displacing them in internally displaced people’s (IDPs) camps have growingly frustrated learners in schools along its valley over the years seeing them lack enough classroom blocks, school uniforms, books, and mathematical sets among other scholastic materials.
The older locals also can no longer sustain themselves financially with little to no income sources
This was revealed when our reporter visited several of them as Nyamwamba division authorities embarked on supplying the students with mathematic sets especially this year’s P.7 candidates so that they can do their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) comfortably.

It has been five years since hundreds hailing along river Nyamwamba valley, especially in areas of Kanyangeya cell, were displaced to Muhokya IDP camp, leaving them with insufficient sources of earning a living as most properties were destroyed hence the failure to provide the requirements for their school going children.

Erick Masereka the head teacher of Kanyangeya Primary School located in Kanyangeya cell that anonymously faced the real wrath of river Nyamwamba floods said that the children in this school have the capacity to perform excellently but the lack of scholastic materials down plays them.

He added that the other frustration is lack of enough class rooms as learners continue to use worn out tents given to them by UICEF during the disastrous floods of the river between 2018 and 2019.
But as for Eunice Sunday Mutooro the head mistress St. Peters Primary school expressed her disappointment with the careless parents who do not mind the learning of their children in the name of free education for all the government of Uganda by failing to pay the little necessary dues required for the excellence of their children including money for lunch as we as failure to present the required data for profiling the children.

Earlier in September, our reporter visited the floods displaced people in Muhokya IDP camp, Rehama Aryema the chairperson of Muhokya IDP camp expressed the continued miserable life people have encountered over the years, denying them a chance to economically empower themselves and take good care of their children but also urged government to avail them the land for resettlement that has promised them for quite some time.

However, Pimako Kasereka the Chairman of LC3 Nyamwamba division said that their only hope still rests on de-silting the river although the exercise was started upstream leaving communities downstream to continue facing the disastrous effects leading to the distraction of infrastructures such as schools, churches and people’s homes.
He further appealed to the office of the prime minister to quicken the process of buying land for the people hailing in the Muhokya IDP camp because the five years in the camp is something one would not adhere to because of the unfair life there.

In a phone call interview, Erias Byamungu the Chief Administrative Office (CAO) Kasese district said that currently they are demarcating the land with much hope of resettling the people.

This is in line with Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabanja the Prime minister who had earlier on in September communicated that the process of resettling the Muhokya camp IDPs was at the end tail. Nyamwamba division has 12 government-aided primary schools of which 596 candidates will be seated for this year’s PLE out of 2743 in the entire Kasese Municipality.
