FDC Calls For Suspension Of House Evictions From Wetlands For A Year
RITAH
The FDC party in Najjanankumbi has called for the suspension of house evictions, accusing the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) of unlawful actions in marking and evicting houses in Bwaise, Kawempe Division, Rubaga, and other locations across the country.
FDC spokesperson John Kikonyogo stated that NEMA's enforcement of environmental regulations is unlawful. Many homeowners, who have government approvals allowing them to settle in these areas, are being affected.
Following President Museveni's support for NEMA's decision to evict encroachers from the Lubigi wetland, the exercise, which began three days ago, has rendered thousands of Ugandans homeless.
At a weekly press conference in Najjanankumbi, John Kikonyogo, the FDC party's spokesperson, criticized NEMA's actions, highlighting that many affected individuals hold government-approved land titles. He expressed concerns that the government's industrial projects often displace people.
However, the FDC has proposed several measures to assist the victims, emphasizing that the government must address key considerations before taking further actions.
They also warned that homelessness could lead to increased crime and social issues in communities and the country.
The party expressed gratitude to the Teso people for their warm reception during a recent rally and expressed confidence in their preparations for the upcoming 2024.
