FDC Cancels Delegates Conference and Officially Names Nandala Mafabi as Presidential Candidate
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated National Delegates Conference, initially scheduled for July 31st. The decision was made following the withdrawal of Patrick Amuriat from the race for the party's presidential flag bearer, simplifying the electoral process.
Patrick Amuriat officially submitted his withdrawal letter on Tuesday, July 28th, paving the way for Nandala Mafabi to become the sole candidate representing the party in the upcoming presidential elections. As a result, the party’s National Chairman, Jack Sabiiti, announced the cancellation of the conference that was meant to select a single candidate, emphasizing the unity and consensus achieved within the party.
In a statement, Sabiiti lauded party members for their cooperation, which facilitated a smooth transition. The move marks a significant shift, as Amuriat was the FDC’s presidential candidate in the 2021 elections but did not secure victory. Despite stepping aside, Amuriat expressed no regrets and indicated his intent to remain active in politics and potentially contest again in future elections.
The newly endorsed presidential candidate, Nandala Mafabi, pledged unwavering support to the party’s leadership and emphasized the urgent need for leadership to address pressing national issues, especially in the health sector. Mafabi also called for unity within the party, highlighting the importance of working together to achieve the party’s goals.
The FDC has scheduled the launch of its manifesto week for August 13th, as it prepares for what promises to be one of Uganda’s most competitive elections in recent history. Party members and supporters are hopeful that the party’s renewed focus and unified front will propel them toward success in the upcoming polls.
