FDC Demands Action On Iron Sheets Scandal

FDC Demands Action On Iron Sheets Scandal

The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has demanded punitive and political action from the appointing authority against the ministers accused of diverting iron sheets meant for relief in the Karamoja sub-region.

The FDC party Deputy Spokesperson, John Kikonyogo told a media conference that in the alternative, the ministers should resign to pave way for investigations.

According to the FDC, the Karamoja iron sheets scandal does not come as a surprise because the systems in government are not respected and have been rendered ineffective.

FDC party Deputy Spokesperson, John Kikonyogo says this is one of the biggest scandals in government involving over 30 billion shillings earmarked to procure the iron sheets and other interventions in the Karamoja sub-region. He is concerned that none of the ministers accused of taking the iron sheets and putting the items to a different use has offered to resign.

According to Kikonyogo, it is absurd that Ugandans just look at such a scandal and feel less bothered and after some time, the issues are not investigated and no action is taken.

Members of Parliament from the Karamoja sub-region have drafted a motion to censure the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Dr. Goretti Kitutu but FDC says such a motion will not succeed.

Now the FDC party is asking the ministers and MPs implicated in the iron sheets scandal to resign and also appealed to the Inspector General of Government (IGG) to carry out investigations

Some of the ministers have acknowledged receiving the iron sheets but said they had applied for them and they also gave them to the people and public facilities in their constituencies that experienced disasters.
