FDC Position On The New Crisis In South Sudan

The FDC party has disregarded the deploying of the UPDF to South Sudan. According to Hon. Fungaroo Kaps Hassan, Deputy President—FDC (In Charge—Northern Uganda), the deployment is not in the best interests of Uganda and citizens. FDC members claim that the government has not provided sufficient justification for the deployment and that the move may exacerbate the conflicts in South Sudan.

The endorsement by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus to deploy Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) to South Sudan following an appeal from President Salva Kiir for urgent support in containing the ongoing conflict has raised fear among the political leaders who believe it may cause disagreement between the Ugandan government and South Sudan.

FDC stated that the government needs to understand the background to this crisis from its historical origin from 1955 to 1972 and is worried for the lives of Ugandans who operate their businesses in South Sudan.

FDC proposes the need for existing UN peacekeeping in South Sudan (UNMISS) and calls for it to be upgraded to a peace enforcement mission.

On the exit of UMEME, FDC voiced that the transition process has been marred by uncertainty, with many Ugandans unsure of what to expect.

They added that the government's decision to take over the distribution network from Umeme was welcomed, but the lack of clear communication on the transition plan created anxiety among the public.
