FDC Regional Leaders Describe Grass Root Elections In The Part As A Sham
The Forum for Democratic Change district leaders from Bunyoro, Toro and Rwenzori regions have described the recently held grass root elections in the party as a sham election and asked all party members not to abide by them.
FDC has been embroiled in internal fights involving two factions. It all started when the party spokesperson Ibrahim Semujju Nganda convened a consultative meeting with some FDC members and informed them of some suspicious money that he says Nandala brought into the party during the 2021 general elections and together with Amuriat utilized it.
The FDC party members who were meeting in Fort Portal blamed the party’s top leadership for being responsible for the exercise not passed by the party’s executive council, describing them as leaders with selfish interests.
The party’s electoral commission recently released an election road map indicating that the village and parish elections were to run up to July 23rd and these would be followed by the sub-county or division elections on the 24th and 25th of July while Constituency elections will be conducted on July 31st and 1ST August.
according to Doreen Nyanjura the party’s executive member who also doubles as the Kampala City Council deputy Lord mayor said the election of district-level leaders is scheduled to run from 3rd August to August 6th.
The party leaders also condemned the manner in which the party leadership treated the party chairman Birigwa saying this tainted the image of the once Uganda’s biggest opposition party.
On Thursday last week, the party Chairman Wasswa Birigwa accused Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi of holding him hostage at the Party headquarters.
Birigwa had visited the party offices at Najjanankumbi where he was scheduled to address the press about the affairs of the party.
Journalists were barred from accessing the headquarters while Birigwa forced himself in through a small gate.
Birigwa who accessed the premises at around 11 am couldn't come out until after 5 pm when he was seen scaling through the fence with the help of some youth believed to be party members.
“We condemn the act that was done on our chairman where he was seen climbing the fence, we condemn it and we ask that it should never happen again.”
“Najjanankumbi offices are for everyone and not for individuals that are FDC members, stop kidnapping people from those offices.”
In the same scuffle, journalists were also beaten, the members also condemned the act saying the action embarrassed them.
“I apologize on behalf of all FDC members for what happened to your colleague, this was an act by a few individuals that had their own interests and it will never happen again.”
The party’s Deputy Treasurer and Buhweju County Member of Parliament Francis Mwijukye welcomed their resolutions saying it’s the party’s National Council that will give a go ahead for the grass root elections in the party.
Doreen Nyanjura, had this to say on whether the fight at the Blue party did not create a bad picture before the public.
