Fire Destroys Property Worth Millions In Kisenyi

A number of traders of Kiganda Zone in Kisenyi, a Kampala suburb are counting losses after a fire last night destroyed property worth millions of shillings

Local leaders say this is not the second time fire guts the area in one year. The cause of the fire is still unclear but investigations have begun.

Traders in Kiganda Zone, Kisenyi Parish in Kampala are in shock after a fire outbreak on Sunday night destroyed property worth millions of shillings.

The fire started at 11am and some of the items destroyed included flour, bananas, chicken feed and other items from the stores of the traders.

As the police fire brigade put out the fire, some traders were seen desperately trying to salvage whatever they could from the rubble.

The gutted area was largely a trading hub. However, a few people have been living there and we found many of them contemplating where they would sleep.

The traders who lost their property are worried because they don't know where to start from. They are asking government for help.

The Police and Civilian Liaison Officer at the Fire Brigade headquarters, Sergeant Walusimbi Elly, said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the fire.

He expressed regret that the management of the facility did not have any plans and measures to prevent a fire outbreak.

A police fire officer, Godfrey Okobo, said that in putting out the fire, their major challenge was that there was no nearby water hydrant in the area. So the fire team had to drive back to the Fire Brigade headquarters to collect more water. There was another fire outbreak in the area about seven months ago.
