Fishermen Warned Against Illegal Fishing On Lake Albert
Fishermen on Lake Albert in Ntoroko District have been warned by the Commander of the Fish Protection Unit (FPU), Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, to desist from illegal fishing practices.
Appointed by the Head of State to lead efforts against poor fishing methods, Lt. Col. Tukahirwa emphasized that only those using approved boats and fishing nets will be allowed to operate at the landing sites.
Delivering remarks on her behalf, the deputy commander of FPU, Sp. Mej. Frank Kanzira, addressed fishermen at Kanara Landing Site in Kanara Town Council, Ntoroko District, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable fishing practices in Ugandan waters.
While delivering remarks on behalf of Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, the deputy commander of FPU Sp. Mej. Frank Kanzira at Kanara Landing Site in Kanara Town Council, Ntoroko District, emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable fishing in Ugandan waters.
Maj. Frank Kanzira, the deputy commander of FPU, added, saying that they are investigating to know where the unwanted fishing gear comes from. Lt. Musa Shaban, the sector commander of Ntoroko and Kagadi, said they have done their best to educate fishermen at landing sites about the proper nets and boats that should be used.
Leaders appreciated the heads of state's directives, saying that fish is now growing and asked for more efforts on lakes. Leaders promised to work together with the fish protection unit team. Fishing gear worth 600 million was intercepted and destroyed.
