Focus Should Be On Elimination Not Treatment- Deputy Speaker

Uganda has joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Malaria Day, with a national call for stronger efforts in the fight against the deadly disease. This year’s national event was held at the Parliament of Uganda, with the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, as the chief guest.

As Uganda marked World Malaria Day, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, emphasized the urgent need to shift the national focus from treating malaria to eliminating it entirely.

The Deputy Speaker commended the Ministry of Health for the recent rollout of the malaria vaccine across the country, calling it a major step in safeguarding Uganda’s future generations.

He also urged parents to ensure their children are tested for malaria before returning to boarding schools — a move aimed at curbing school-based transmission and improving early detection.

World Malaria Day is commemorated annually on April 25th to raise awareness and inspire action. This year’s theme was "Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite." Uganda remains among the high-burden countries, but with sustained efforts and new tools like vaccines, the dream of a malaria-free future could become a reality.
