Fort Portal launches drive to extend water in City Schools

A corporate games drive which has been organized by Rwenzori Aid in the effort to raise money for water extension in the Fort portal city schools is underway in the corporate league has seen a number of companies and organizations take part.

According to Kabarole District Wash Master Plan 2018-2030, access to water services and reliability of existing water supply facilities is low.

The adoption of hand washing with soap at household level according to the report was also found very low, with less than 10% of the households having improved sanitation facilities with hand washing facilities with water and soap.

Ndamila Joseph, a Councilor in Fort Portal city who is also taking part in the games says the idea of washing hands should be embraced by all and sundry.

According to the Water Supply Atlas, the access rates in Kabarole and Fort Portal vary from 7% in Kijura Town council to 95% in Bukuuku Sub-County.

Kabarole and Fort Portal have 1,137 domestic water points which serve a total of btween 258,053 people – 178,127 in rural areas. About 207 water points have been non-functional for over 5 years and are considered abandoned.

Muhumuza Richard, the Fort Portal Central Division Mayor, says the challenges they face in extending water to the people are enormous.
