Fort Portal leaders accused of sabotaging Kabundaire market operations.
Traders at Kabundaire market in Fort Portal city are decrying loss of monies resulting from decomposing merchandise due to lack of buyers, something they say has been masterminded by the city council authorities whom they accuse of siding with traders who operate outside the market to deprive them of making sales.
‘’For us we pay license and everything but the customer cannot come
here and buy because they find all they need outside.’’
The traders say efforts to have the city authorities restore the situation to normal have been unsuccessful.
‘’They don’t help us, traders outside bribe leaders, our chairman asks
for help but nothing happens, we are going to put all our merchandise
on the road.’’
‘’We have tried writing to our leaders but nothing happens.’’
In September this year, all roadside traders were ordered to operate within the market, we probe further to understand why this has not been effected.
The traders now demand that all traders operating from outside the market should be forced to operate within the market.
‘’We ask the authorities to go into actions and not just words.’’
‘’We ask that those who are selling from outside be brought inside
because they already have stalls inside.’’
Those operating outside the market however say there’s not enough space inside the market to accommodate all the traders.
However, during an interview recently with Karwani Michael, the Fort
portal Commercial officer, he noted that all fresh merchandise traders who were operating inside the market had been ordered to move out to pave way for those selling from the roadsides.
