Gov’t Farmers’ Leaders Unveil Strategies to Boost Agricultural Transformation: Youth Urged to Embrace Farming as Key to Economic Empowerment. PDM And Value Addition Take Centre Stage in Agric
Leaders from Operation Wealth Creation, the Uganda National Farmers Federation, and the Uganda Development Forum have unveiled a coordinated strategy to transform Uganda’s agricultural sector, prioritizing productivity, value addition, and improved livelihoods for farmers.
Uganda’s agriculture sector, which employs more than 70 percent of the population and remains a major contributor to the country’s GDP, is once again under the spotlight as stakeholders intensify efforts to boost output, strengthen value chains, and raise household incomes through initiatives such as Operation Wealth Creation and the Parish Development Model.
Addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre, the Deputy Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, Brig Gen Godfrey Muwanguzi, emphasized that economic empowerment is attainable for all Ugandans through active participation in government-led wealth creation programs.
He underscored the importance of citizen involvement at every level as a critical driver of successful agricultural transformation.
The President of the Uganda National Farmers Federation, Dr. Dick Kamuganga, welcomed the ongoing interventions, pointing to growing confidence among stakeholders in the sector.
He revealed that the federation has launched nationwide campaigns to identify model farmers at parish level, with plans to link them to development partners for support and capacity building.
Meanwhile, Edward Katende, Executive Director of the Uganda Development Forum and PDM Secretariat, cautioned that declining youth interest in agriculture poses a growing threat to future food security, despite Uganda’s strong production potential.
Katende noted that government capital is being channelled through the Parish Development Model to strengthen farmer capacity and enhance household incomes across parishes.
He further highlighted plans to establish parish-level training and demonstration centres to equip farmers with practical, modern farming skills.
He also outlined targeted youth engagement programs aimed at positioning agriculture as a viable and profitable enterprise.
Leaders are now rallying more young Ugandans to take up agriculture, describing it as a cornerstone for economic transformation and sustainable development.
The Uganda Development Forum has pledged continued support to farmers, with expanded outreach programs aimed at ensuring inclusive participation in the country’s agricultural growth agenda.
