Gov’t Given One Month Ultimatum To Conduct LC1 Elections

A section of members of parliament has given the government one month to organize elections for both women's council and the lc1 elections

These leaders have seen their terms expire with no preparations for fresh elections

The local government minister Raphael Magyezi says the country has no funds totalling 59 billion shillings needed to carry out elections.
The minister says they have extended terms for these leaders although the move has been termed as illegal by some members of parliament.

After occupying their offices for five years, local council leaders have seen their terms expire. The term for LC1 office bearers came to an end Last week on Tuesday 10th 2023.

Much as this has been known by the government, there are no indicators of fresh elections to have these leaders replaced or reappointed.

Yesterday the local government minister Raphael Magyezi told parliament that the ministry has extended the terms of these leaders until fresh elections are conducted.
The ministry needs about 59 billion Uganda shillings to hold fresh elections for both women council and local council leaders.

The extension worries legislators who believe any operations of these leaders can be challenged in courts of law given that the contract came to an end.

However, Raphael Magyezi, the minister for the local government says they have now embarked on consultative meetings with stakeholders to forge a way forward.
While the government passed a budget of over 52 trillion shillings for the current financial year, the 59 billion shillings required to conduct these elections have been categorized under unfunded priorities.
